Medical and WC Building, Danes Hill School, Surrey

Question: How do you build within the green belt?

Answer: Sink the building into the ground, clad it in natural weathering materials and roof it with grass.

This was a sensitive project due to its green belt location. A great amount of time and effort by the Architects provided a design that provided all the necessary functions and blended in with its location.

The construction has a piled foundation and reinforced concrete ground beams and walls. The exterior is clad in raw oak and the well-insulated roof covered in a sedam mat.

The interior is a robust functional design that’s fit for purpose.

The services element for drainage, electrical and gas supplies especially, proved to be a challenge due to the building’s remote location away from other properties.
